A few years after Giovanni Tacconelli immigrated to Philadelphia from Italy, he decided to bake bread as he did before leaving home. He and a few friends built a brick oven, and his business thrived until World War II when his sons were drafted. Giovanni was forced to stop baking until 1946 when he decided to use the oven to make tomato pies with a lot of sauce and a sprinkle of cheese. Now in its fifth generation, Tacconelli's offers a casual atmosphere, and in addition to the tomato pie, the menu includes traditional pizzas topped with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, and more.
