The story began when a young lad by the name of Charles Steckel worked odd jobs on local apple farms, and over time learned how to brew his own hard apple cider. After serving in the Marines, he turned his basement into a personal laboratory to strenuously perfect his beloved art of brewing. Year after year, he would passionately labor on his continuing quest for the best cider and his hard work and generosity earned him quite the reputation as a brewer.

Years later, his grandson John Kowchak became interested in the family tradition and began brewing as a hobby. Finally, he founded Original XIII Ciderworks in the summer of 2013. Through many setbacks, John has managed to keep the business alive and well and has kept his passion for offering up delicious cider concoctions strong.

Original XIII Ciderworks offers ciders, meads, India Pale Ales, and other drinks for your pleasure, as well as brunch and dinner items such as breakfast tacos, potato perogies, burgers, and chicken wings. Without a doubt, this pub and brewery is worth a visit when you're in Philadelphia.
